Its station number is U-14. The station opened on 27 March 2006. It is one of the least-used train stations in Tokyo, with an average of 22 daily passengers in 2011;〔http://www.toukei.metro.tokyo.jp/tnenkan/2011/tn11q3i004.htm〕 as of 2013 all of the surrounding area is either vacant or under construction. The station's name literally means "In Front of the Marketplace," referring to a plan to move the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market (more popularly known as the Tsukiji fish market) to an adjacent site. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government originally planned to complete this move by 2012, but Democratic Party of Japan legislators cut the budget for the move in 2010; the budget was reinstated in 2012 and the move is currently expected to be complete by 2018.
